A Strategic Stronghold in Maval
The origins of Tikona Fort, also known as Vitandgad, can be traced back to the 7th-8th century AD with the presence of a Buddhist Vihara. Its strategic location in the Maval region made it a coveted possession for various powers.
In 1585, the Nizam Shahi dynasty captured the fort. However, its most significant period came under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who brought it under Maratha control in 1657, recognizing its importance in guarding the Pawana Mawal region.
The fort briefly fell to the Mughals after the Treaty of Purandar in 1665 but was later recaptured by the Marathas. It remained a Maratha stronghold until 1818 when it was eventually taken by the British during the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
