The Peshwa's Stronghold and British Conquest

Constructed between 1713 and 1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, Visapur Fort was a testament to strategic military planning. Its primary purpose was to guard and control the vital trade routes passing through the Borghats, connecting the Deccan Plateau to the Konkan coast.

The fort's history is closely intertwined with that of Lohagad. While Lohagad was an older fort, Visapur was built to enhance the defensive capabilities of the region. The British recognized this strategic importance during the Third Anglo-Maratha War. In 1818, they attacked and captured Visapur, using its higher elevation to bombard Lohagad, eventually leading to the fall of both forts.

After its capture, the British demolished the fort's entrances and left much of it in ruins to prevent its future use as a military base.
