A Fort of Many Dynasties and Maratha Valor
The fort's origins trace back to the 10th century under the Lohtamia dynasty. Over time, it was controlled by the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizams, Mughals, and Marathas, each contributing to its fortifications and legacy.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj recognized Lohagad's strategic importance, capturing it in 1648. Though temporarily ceded to the Mughals under the Treaty of Purandar in 1665, Shivaji Maharaj recaptured it in 1670 and used it as a treasury.
Later, during the Peshwa era, Nana Phadnavis used the fort for refuge and undertook significant construction, including a large tank and a step-well, which are still visible today.
