A Fortress of Resilience and Maratha Valor
Built between 1178 and 1209 AD by the Shilahara ruler Bhoja II, Panhala Fort was strategically located to control vital trade routes. It later came under the control of the Yadavas, Bahmanis, and the Adil Shahi dynasty, each contributing to its fortifications.
The fort's most iconic period was under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1659, he captured Panhala, but in 1660, it was besieged by Adil Shahi forces. During this siege, Shivaji Maharaj made his legendary escape to Vishalgad, a heroic event known as the Battle of Pavan Khind, where Baji Prabhu Deshpande sacrificed his life to ensure Shivaji's safety.
Panhala remained a crucial stronghold for the Marathas, even briefly falling to Aurangzeb in 1701 before being recaptured. It served as a base for Tarabai, Shivaji's daughter-in-law, and continued to play a significant role until it came under British rule in 1818.
