A Fort of Contested Origins and Maratha Valor

According to Sabhasad Bakhar, Gandharvagad is listed among the 111 forts restored by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, suggesting its existence and strategic value during his reign. It is mentioned that Shivaji Maharaj marched near this fort in 1666 during his campaign to capture Panhalgad.

However, the Gazetteer states that Gandharvagad was built around 1724 by Nag Savant, the second son of Phond Savant of Savantvadi. This indicates a later construction or significant rebuilding under the Savantwadi rulers. The fort subsequently changed hands multiple times, being captured by the Kolhapur chief in 1778, restored to Savantvadi in 1793 through Scindia's influence, and briefly held by the chief of Nesargi around 1787.

The fort's active military history concluded in 1844 when it was largely destroyed by the British. Today, its ruins stand as a historical marker, offering insights into the regional power struggles and the architectural styles of hill forts in Maharashtra.
