The Impregnable Star of Satara

Originally built in the 12th century by Raja Bhoj of the Shilahara dynasty, Ajinkyatara Fort's strategic location made it a coveted prize. It later came under the control of the Bahmanis, Adil Shahis, and then the Marathas.

In 1673 CE, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort, recognizing its importance. It briefly fell to the Mughals under Aurangzeb, who renamed it Azamara, but was heroically recaptured by Maratha Queen Tarabai, who restored its original name, 'Ajinkyatara' (The Impregnable Star).

The fort remained a significant Maratha stronghold until 1818, when it was eventually annexed by the British. Today, it stands as a symbol of Maratha resilience and offers a glimpse into the region's vibrant past.
