The Unconquered Bastion of the Siddis

Initially, a wooden structure was built by local Koli fishermen in the 15th century to protect against pirates. This was later fortified into a strong stone fort by Malik Ambar, the Abyssinian regent of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate, around 1567 AD.

The fort became the stronghold of the Siddis, an Abyssinian Muslim community, who successfully defended it against repeated attacks from the Marathas, Mughals, and Portuguese. Its strategic location and robust construction, including 26 intact artillery towers and massive cannons, made it virtually unconquerable.

Notable attempts to capture Janjira include those by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1676 and his son Sambhaji Maharaj in 1682, both of which were unsuccessful. The fort remained under Siddi rule until India's independence in 1947, a remarkable feat in Indian history.
