The Birthplace of a Legend and a Naval Stronghold
While the origins of Suvarnadurg are linked to the Adil Shahi dynasty, it rose to prominence after being captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1660. Recognising its strategic island location, Shivaji Maharaj heavily fortified it to shield the Konkan coast against the Siddis of Janjira and European colonial interests.
The fort's history is inseparable from that of Kanhoji Angre, the greatest Admiral of the Maratha Navy. Born on the fort in 1667, Kanhoji grew up amidst its salt-sprayed walls and eventually took command of the Maratha fleet. Under his leadership Suvarnadurg became a dreaded name for the British, Dutch and Portuguese navies.
Architecturally the fort is a masterpiece of maritime defence. Its main gate, the Mahadarwaja, is carved with a tiger and an elephant, representing the strength and wisdom of the Maratha Empire. The fort also features a 'Chor Darwaja' or secret gate, and several freshwater tanks that were vital during long sieges.
In 1755 a combined force of the British and the Peshwas captured the fort from the Angre family, leading to its eventual decline. Today Suvarnadurg remains one of the most significant sea forts in India, part of the Maratha Military Landscapes.

The Shadows of the Konkan

The fort was a safe haven for these ships to retreat, resupply and plan their next strike against colonial trade routes.
