The Island Fortress of Vasai Prant

The fort was originally constructed in 1516 by Sultan Mahmud Begada of Gujarat. Recognizing its strategic importance at the mouth of the Vaitarna River, the Portuguese took control in 1530, building a Martello tower and using the island to control shipping along the northern Konkan coast.

The turning point in the fort's history came in 1737. Following the Maratha victory at the Battle of Vasai, Peshwa Baji Rao I's brother, Chimaji Appa, launched a coordinated assault on Arnala. After an initial setback, the Marathas successfully captured the fort, forcing the Portuguese to abandon it. The fort was subsequently rebuilt and strengthened by the Marathas.

Arnala remained a crucial Maratha naval base until it was captured by the British during the Anglo-Maratha wars. Today, the fort ruins stand amidst a bustling Koli fishing village, serving as a silent reminder of the region's turbulent past.
